PUBLIC Hotel NYC: A Stylish, Work-Friendly Stay in the Lower East Side
If you’re heading to New York City for work and want a hotel that’s functional, comfortable, and just a little bit cool—PUBLIC Hotel NYC in the Lower East Side checks all the right boxes. I recently stayed here for a few busy days of meetings, laptop marathons, and evening catch-ups, and the hotel delivered everything I needed with zero fuss and a lot of style.

First Impressions: Smooth, Simple, and Sleek
Check-in was fast and self-service, which I actually appreciated after a long flight. The lobby is modern and welcoming, filled with natural wood, warm lighting, and low-key background music. It’s clearly designed to be a space people want to hang out in, not just pass through.
My room was ready early, which was a nice surprise. The first thing I noticed? The hardwood floors. They gave the space a clean, warm vibe that made it feel more like an upscale apartment than a standard hotel room. The design is minimalist (very japandi) but not cold—just the essentials, done really well.
Rooms That Get the Job Done (and Then Some)
The rooms at PUBLIC are compact but super functional. I had a built-in desk where I got a solid amount of work done, thanks to the strong Wi-Fi and plenty of natural light coming through the big windows. USB ports, outlets, and thoughtful lighting made it easy to stay productive without hunting around for plugs or switches.
The design leans into modern minimalism with a warm edge—think natural materials like wood and linen, cozy lighting, and an overall sense of calm. A neutral color palette made the room feel bright and airy, while pops of texture in the bedding and wall finishes kept it interesting.
The bed was firm but comfortable, with quality linens and pillows that made it easy to wind down. The built-in storage was cleverly tucked away, helping to keep the space clutter-free.
Bathrooms: Simple, Clean, and Thoughtfully Designed
The bathroom setup is sleek and efficient. You walk into a bright, modern space with clean lines, frosted glass accents, and a large mirror that makes the room feel bigger. The rainfall shower was definitely a highlight—strong pressure, great temperature control, and just what I needed after long days around the city.
The tile work was minimal and modern, in muted tones that matched the rest of the room’s aesthetic. There’s a floating vanity with open shelving underneath, which made it easy to keep my toiletries organized.
And the full-sized Le Labo toiletries? A total win. The scent added a spa-like touch, and having quality products available made packing that much easier. Fluffy towels and a powerful hairdryer rounded out the experience nicely.
Coffee, Food, and More Coffee
Each morning started at LOUIS, the hotel’s café and market-style spot. It had great coffee, easy grab-and-go breakfast options, and healthy snacks to fuel a busy day. One night I had dinner at Popular, their Peruvian restaurant. The food was flavorful and fresh—definitely worth trying if you’re staying in.
PUBLIC’s rooftop bar is also worth a visit, even if you’re in town for work. The views are incredible, and the crowd is a good mix of locals and travelers. It’s a nice way to unwind after a day of meetings.
A Great Base for Work and Exploring
Location-wise, PUBLIC is in a great spot. The Lower East Side is full of character, with lots of places to eat, grab a drink, or just walk around. It’s easy to get to other parts of the city—SoHo, the Financial District, and Midtown are all a short subway or Uber ride away.
During my stay, I had work site visits in SoHo and Midtown and never spent more than 20 minutes in transit. In the evenings, I explored the neighborhood, stopped into Freeman’s for dinner one night, and even caught a show at Bowery Ballroom. There’s also a super modern and spacious co-working space in the hotel which I used for quite a bit during my stay.
What I Did During My Work Trip
Here’s a quick rundown of how I spent my time:

- Visited work sites across SoHo and Brooklyn
- Worked from my room in the mornings, then the lobby lounge in the afternoons
- Grabbed coffee and light bites from LOUIS each day
- Met friends for drinks at the rooftop bar
- Ate dinner at Octo one night and explored local spots the others
- Walked to the Financial District one morning for a meeting
- Visited the Noguchi Museum and a nearby gallery after work
The hotel made it easy to balance work and downtime without having to plan everything out in advance.
Staff and Service
The staff were helpful without being overbearing. When I needed help with directions or late checkout, they were friendly and quick to respond. Otherwise, everything ran smoothly without much need for interaction—which I actually appreciated. Sometimes, less is more.
Final Thoughts: Modern, Easy, and Just Cool Enough
PUBLIC Hotel isn’t trying to be flashy. It’s comfortable, well-designed, and totally functional for a work trip. You’ve got fast Wi-Fi, great coffee, stylish rooms with hardwood floors, and a solid location that makes the city feel very accessible.
It’s not over-the-top luxury, but it doesn’t need to be. If you’re in NYC for work (and maybe a little play), PUBLIC is a great place to stay without any of the extra fluff you probably won’t use anyway.
I’d stay here again in a heartbeat—next time, maybe with a little more free time to enjoy the rooftop and soak in those skyline views.
