The Aelios Hotel: A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Chania
If you’re looking for a hidden gem in the heart of Chania, the Aelios Hotel should be at the top of your list. From the hospitality of the staff to the secluded courtyard, this hotel offers a unique experience that’s perfect for travelers looking for something different. My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights back in 2019 during our first trip to Chania and the boutique experience at Aelios was incredible.
Warm Hospitality Despite Language Barrier
When my partner and I arrived at the hotel, we were impressed with the warm welcome from the staff. Even though they didn’t speak English very well and we didn’t speak Greek at all, they went out of their way to organize a taxi for us to the airport and allowed us to bring an umbrella that we borrowed during our stay. It’s rare to find such kind hospitality these days, and we really appreciated it. Also to mention, it is still family ran and owned with the building originating from the 18th century!
Secluded Courtyard Oasis
One of the standout features of the Aelios Hotel is the secluded courtyard that’s perfect for relaxing after a day of sightseeing. The courtyard is surrounded by local Cretan trees and flowers, creating a peaceful atmosphere that feels like a world away from the bustling city outside.
Free Raki? Yes Please
Another unique aspect of the hotel is the daily replenishment of raki, a traditional Greek spirit. This was a lovely touch that made us feel welcome and gave us a taste of local culture. The bottle was the best way to end the night after a long day of activities.
Central Location in the Old Town
The Aelios Hotel is located in the heart of Chania’s old town, making it the perfect base for exploring the city. The hotel is just a short walk from the Venetian Harbour, the Archaeological Museum, and the Municipal Market. We loved being able to step outside and explore the narrow streets and colorful alleys of the old town.
Our Trip
During our stay at the Aelios Hotel, we took a spontaneous boat cruise for only 10 euros per person that allowed us to see many different sights and go for a swim. We explored hidden beaches, swam in the crystal-clear waters, and saw the stunning coastline from a new perspective. The central location and the close proximity to the harbour really allowed us to explore without having to do much planning!
Superb Hard Floors
One of the standout features of the hotel is the superb hard floors that add to the modern aesthetic of the rooms. The floors were immediately spotless as we entered our room, and they give the rooms a sleek, minimalist look that’s perfect for the contemporary traveler.
Downside: Inaccessible by Car
One downside of the hotel’s location is that it’s nested in the old town and is inaccessible by car. If you’re planning to rent a car or take a taxi, you’ll need to walk to the main roads for transportation.
Overall, the Aelios Hotel is a unique and welcoming place to stay in the heart of Chania. From the warm hospitality of the staff to the secluded courtyard and superb hard floors, this hotel offers a memorable experience that’s perfect for the modern traveler.
